Swim Meet Etiquette

Before the meet:

  • Attend practice Monday morning and be confident in your skills!
  • Go to Swimtopia and write down your events
  • Avoid being in the sun for a long time
  • Rest and stay hydrated

What to bring:

  • It is recommended that each swimmer wears an official team swimsuit. Swimmers should also wear a swim cap during meets, and bring goggles and a towel.
  • Sunscreen/Shade: It can be quite hot and sunny for the first hour or so of the meet.
  • Blanket/Chairs: There are often chairs available at the pool, but not always.
  • Water/Food: There is most often food for sale and details about what exactly will be offered is sent out by the hosting team the week before the meet (at WRA you must pay with cash). It is a good idea to bring healthy snacks or a picnic dinner if you prefer not to purchase dinner at the pool.
  • Entertainment: There is some downtime between events and this can be a great time to engage with other swimmers and families. Bring games that will keep your kids occupied and happy. We would like to encourage our swimmers to cheer on their teammates, and discourage the use of video games and other electronic devices. This is the perfect chance for our swimmers to interact as a team, create friendships, and support the Wahoos.

Swim Meet Rules

According to USA Swimming:

  • Swimwear shall include only a swimsuit, cap, and goggles. It is not permissible to wear more than two (2) caps
  • Swim shirts are not allowed
  • Tie-back swimsuits and two-piece swimsuits are not allowed
  • Any kind of tape on the body is not permitted unless approved by the Referee
  • For men, the swimsuit shall not extend above the navel nor below the knees
  • For women, the swimsuit shall not cover the neck, extend past the shoulder, nor extend below the knee
  • Caps and swimwear cannot be worn as advertisement for another team. No SwimRVA, NOVA, or other team swimwear is allowed. Caps with other logos may be worn inside-out.

Any swimmer wearing attire that violates these rules will be disqualified.

Exemptions will be granted only for conflicts due to the swimmer’s verified religious beliefs, verified medical conditions or other reasons deemed appropriate. If your swimmer must wear a shirt or medical tape during their race, you must give the coach a written doctor/parent note to give to the Referee.

Parent Involvement

Swim team isn’t only for your child- it’s for you too! Practices and meets are perfect times to watch your child progress and improve, and to socialize with other swim team parents. The best way to enjoy your swim team experience is to volunteer at the meets. Parent volunteering is required for every swimmer on our team because each meet requires 60+ volunteers to ensure that it runs smoothly and to allow everyone to enjoy the meet. It is also an easy way to learn more about what your child is involved in, and there are plenty of ways to get involved.
